Mobile Traning Center

Smith & Nephew’s Orthopaedics division announced the launch of its MOBILAB, a mobile training center that will take training directly to surgeons all over the U.S.

The MOBILAB unit is a 53-ft, 80,000-lb. tractor-trailer, which expands to a 6-station, operating roomstyle training facility that can accommodate up to 24 surgeons at one time for training sessions or product demonstrations. The MOBI-LAB Mobile Training Center is fully equipped with general instrumentsand Smith & Nephew products such as the Achieve CAS system for computer-assisted hip and knee implant surgery. Surgeons can also use MOBILAB’s facilities to perfect new techniques and practice with systems before a live surgery without having to travel.

MOBILAB contains a conference room and an outdoor seating area for surgeon meetings and product demonstrations. The trailer alsoincludes 6 screen monitors, one foreach lab station, and plasma screens in the conference room and in the outdoor canopied area, allowing surgeons to watch instructing surgeons perform procedures and view surgical techniques during hands-on labs. The MOBILAB unit is scheduled to appear at 9 orthopedic meetings in 2006.

Labral Repair Technology

ArthroCare® Corp. announced today the launch of its new LabraFix™ System. This knotless arthroscopic repair technology provides an easy and fast labral repair and is designed to provide orthopedic surgeons with an enhanced arthroscopic approach to repairing labrum tears (Bankart and SLAP lesions) without having to tie complex and time-consuming surgical knots. Arthrocare notes that the system has the potential to lower procedure costs by minimizing surgery time because it is faster than conventional arthroscopic techniques by enabling 5-second direct, single-step suturing and knotless fixation.

The LabraFix system consists of 2 components. The SpeedStitch™ Suturing Device enables rapid and direct placement of an ultra-high-strength MagnumWire™ stitch in the labral tissue. It is specially designed with a low jaw profile to allow easy access to the entire labral circumference, while providing a deep bite into the labral and capsular tissue for optimal stitch placement. Once the lower jaw is positioned, the telescoping “upper jaw” of the device immobilizes the labral tissue, and the SpeedStitch’s needle is deployed to capture the suture and pull it through the labrum, placing the labral stitch in a matter of seconds.

Next, the surgeon loads and deploys the MiniMagnum™ Implantin to the glenoid rim. This implant’s internal mechanism provides cinchable and reversible tissue tensioning to achieve an optimal tissue-to-bone contact, and its suture locking mechanism eliminates th eneed for cumbersome arthroscopic knot tying.

When used together, the SpeedStitch™ and the MiniMagnum™ were designed to provide a strong and reproducible tissue-to-bone fixation as a result of a tissue tensioning mechanism, a superior bone lock or hold, and a secure knotless suture lock.

About the Vital Wrap System

The VitalWrap System is designed to reduce pain and swelling by providing controlled heating, cooling, and compression therapy. This all-in-one system is intended to assist healthcare professionals and individuals looking to: 1) treat virtually any type of chronic oracute sports-related injury, 2)enhance postsurgical recovery, and/or 3) help to ease chronic pain due to arthritis, circulatory issues,or other causes.

Because the VitalWrap System is portable and easy-to-use, it can be used in both the clinic and home settings. Its patent-pending technology provides for precise temperature control (thus permitting lengthened therapy), alternating hot/cold contrast) therapy, and comfortable, constant compression to help speed healing. It is alsoaffordable—often reimbursable.
