NEWLY AVAILABLE, NEWLY APPROVED

Improved Tibial Strength In ACL Reconstruction

Scandius BioMedical, Inc. announced today the release of the TriTis™ Tibial Fixation System, an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction system designed to provide a stronger tibial fixation solution. The new system provides this strength in 3 ways, with a cleat for tissue compression in the bone tunnel; an off-axis fixation screw to anchor the device; and a fixation washer to capture graft limbs and prevent graft slippage. The TriTis System also introduces new, easy-to-use instrumentation that allows the surgeon to actually feel compression in the tunnel based on the patient’s anatomy, rather than estimating based on a sizing chart.

The TriTis system was designed in conjunction with orthopedic surgeons to achieve improved biomechanics by enabling fixation close to the joint line; reliable fixation, by achieving graft compression and preventing graft migration; and greater patient comfort and healing, by eliminating painful cortical fixation devices that may have to be removed at a later time.

The TriTis System includes a wide range of implant size choices and easy-to-use instrumentation to facilitate the procedure.

Xenograft Line

Regeneration Technologies, Inc., the Florida-based processor of orthopedic, cardiovascular and other biologic implants, is officially launching its Sterling® xenograft line of implants.

The new Sterling product line, which includes interference screws and cancellous chips and cubes, is available immediately through RTI’s direct distribution representatives. Sterling Biological Matrix provides surgeons with an expanded supply of safe, sterile tissue that is a natural alternative to autograft, allograft, and synthetic resorbable materials. The manufacturer notes that studies show Sterling grafts to maintain structural integrity and enhance biocompatibility.

Stabilized Knee System

Smith & Nephew Orthopaedic Reconstruction has announced the launch of the JOURNEY™ Bi-Cruciate Stabilized Knee System, a knee replacement system designed to restore natural knee motion.

The JOURNEY anatomical knee system is designed to move and feel like a normal knee and to address problems such as instability and limited flexion. The JOURNEY System offers the additional durability of Smith & Nephew’s proprietary alternate-bearing surface, OXINIUM™ oxidized zirconium.

The system is "bi-cruciate stabilized," providing functions for both the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments.

The surgical technique is similar to other knee procedures, and the JOURNEY system's newly designed instruments allow for both minimally invasive surgery and computer-assisted surgery.

To replicate normal knee function, Smith & Nephew conducted in-depth analyses of natural knee kinematics and the inherent limitations in knee replacement systems. The JOURNEY knee system offers more sizing options for better fit and minimal bone resections. Smaller sizing choices are more amenable to female anatomy and designed to allow the best fit for all patients.

Vertebral Augmentation System

Cardinal Health has introduced its new Vertebrex system for the treatment of vertebral compression fractures.

The cement tube is newly designed to allow the physician to avoid pressure build-up when starting an injection and reduces the risk of trailing cement behind when the injection is complete.

The Vertebrex system automatically mixes preloaded cement components with a computerized motor in order to achieve a more consistent, uniform result each time. Since Vertebrex is a closed system, noxious odors are virtually eliminated, and sharps risk associated with the glass ampoule is minimized.

Custom Spine Biocomposite

Wright Medical Group, Inc. has received marketing clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration for use of its ALLOMATRIX® Custom Biocomposite as a bone graft extender in the spine. In a prospective clinical study comparing lumbar fusions using an autograft from the patient’s iliac crest with ALLOMATRIX® Custom Biocomposite combined with bone marrow aspirate and local bone, outcomes were found to be substantially equivalent. Wright notes that patients treated with the ALLOMATRIX® Custom Biocomposite are spared the additional operative time, blood loss, cost, and discomfort that is common with the iliac crest harvesting procedure.

ALLOMATRIX® Custom Biocomposite is unique in that it is delivered to the customer in a freeze-dried, powdered form, thus ensuring the demineralized bone matrix proteins are preserved until mixed and prepared at the time of surgery. The powdered DBM is combined with a high volume of large cancellous bone chips, enabling the surgeon to deliver high volumes of the patient’s own osteogenic bone marrow to the fusion site to aid in the complex bone repair cascade.

Pain Therapy Tool

Southwest Cold Laser, authorized dealer for MicroLight Corporation of America, announces the ML830® Cold Laser, an effective and efficient pain relief modality.

As a result of FDA market clearance received in early 2002 for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome, MicroLight brought the ML830® to the U.S. market, and it has been used by medical doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, and chiropractors. The ML 830® was designed by a team of doctors and medical engineers to harness advanced low-energy laser technology for therapeutic application.

The company notes that the ML830 Cold Laser can alleviate pain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic back pain, arthritis, postoperative pain, tendonitis, and headaches.
