New Guide System

Smith & Nephew’s Endoscopy Division has announced the launch of the CROSSTRAC™ Hip Guide System, which enables surgeons to accurately establish pathways to diagnose and repair the hip joint using arthroscopy or minimally invasive repair procedures.

The company notes that the CROSSTRAC Hip Guide ensures more reliable, predictable portal placement on the first attempt. Guided by a radiograph, the surgeon establishes the first portal and inserts an arthroscope. With that portal in place, the CROSSTRAC Hip Guide is attached to the arthroscope and enables the surgeon to establish secondary portals in the appropriate place. The CROSSTRAC enables surgeons to achieve proper placement without repeated attempts and to accurately and quickly access the hip joint and devote more procedure time to diagnosing and repairing hip damage.

Total Knee System

Cardo Medical has announced the FDA 510k clearance of its Align 360 Total Knee System, an advanced knee platform. Its femoral component features a funnel-shaped patella track that accommodates the quadriceps angle anatomy for both male and female patients without the need for gender-specific components. In addition, the company notes that the anterior geometry of the femoral component has been designed to reduce anteromedial overhang of the femoral component, which has been clinically proven to be a cause of postoperative knee pain.

A high-performance treatment for tricompartmental arthritis offering a choice of either a cruciate-sparing or posterior-stabilizing device, the Align 360 comprehensive knee system allows the surgeon to use matched instrumentation for surgical treatment of unicompartmental, bicompartmental, and tricompartmental arthritis. The Align 360 platform boasts a common, modular instrument set and component-design heritage and philosophy.

The Align 360 Total Knee System is planned for commercial release during the second quarter of 2009.
