In the Eye of the Beholder: Rethinking "Success" in Orthopedic Trauma
Michael Suk, MD, JD, MPH, Beate P. Hanson, MD,
and David L. Helfet, MD
Drs. Suk, Hanson, and Helfet applaud the increasing use of patient-reported outcomes measures and a better understanding of outcomes measures selection in defining success in orthopedic trauma. They point to the next challenge in outcomes research: bridging the gap between existing validated outcomes measures and patient/surgeon expectations.

O'Donnell and colleagues present radiological and and clinical data from 118
patients treated with the "Tobruk" method over a 3-year period. They
have found plaster-of-Paris augmentation of a Thomas’ splint to be a relatively
safe and effective way of treating these fractures in children.

Bilateral
Galeazzi
Fracture-Dislocations
Olivier Borens, MD, Eric L. Chehab, MD, Matthew M. Roberts, MD, David L. Helfet,
MD, and David S. Levine, MD
Dr. Borens and colleagues treated a motorcyclist who sustained bilateral Galeazzi
fracture-dislocations with an irreducible distal radioulnar joint on one side.
They describe the surgical technique used and recommendations for optimal management
strategies for acute TFCC lesions in the setting of a Galeazzi fracture.
Tethered Lateral Patellar Dislocation
as a Complication After Galeazzi Procedure
MAJ Daniel B. Judd, MD, COL William Burkhalter, Jr., MD,
and David H. Kim, MD
A modified reduction maneuver and a short period of immobilization followed by
appropriate rehabilitation are prescribed by the authors for this complication.

Lisfranc
Joint Injuries:
Diagnosis
and Treatment
Stephen A. Hunt, MD, Christopher Ropiak, MD, and Nirmal C. Tejwani, MD
Noting that Lisfranc joint injuries often go undiagnosed or inadequately treated,
resulting in poor long-term outcomes, the authors provide an overview, with recommendations
for early recognition and treatment. |
